“when the world falls in love…every song you hear…seems to saaaaay…Merry Christmaaaaaas….toooooo youuuu”
Have you heard Harry Connick, Jr.’s version of The Christmas Waltz? Because you should look it up right this very instant. Go ahead. I’ve got time to wait.
So, the secret’s out. Christmas has begun in our house. Admittedly, it was a bit earlier than usual this year, although I WILL say, I made it a LOT later in terms of Christmas music. It’s just… I love it.
I taught a pie-making class to a group of 14 and 15-year old young women from church last Wednesday, and the home the activity was hosted in was magnificently decorated for Christmas. The tree was beautiful, and there were all sorts of places around the living room and kitchen with little decorations, displays, and nativity sets. It was absolutely beautiful.
By the time I got home, I was ready to listen to Christmas music, and Michael was 100% on board.
Decorating for Christmas is different in an apartment. For instance, although we feel like we have a lovely-sized space for our needs, there just isn’t a great place for a Christmas tree. So, we have yet to have one in our marriage. So, to spruce things up without the greenery, we strung twinkle lights across our windows, put up our few decorations, and put together a centerpiece on our kitchen table. To top things off, we bought a small set of those heavenly-scented pinecones to keep our house smelling Christmas-y.
It’s early. I know. Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened yet. But it’s feeling very merry at our house. And I love it.

I love your choice in decor. I’m not brave enough for the decorations to come out yet but I’m getting close. Oh Christmas, I LOVE YOU!
I have followed your blog for so long now I feel I know you so well, though we have never met (and are never likely to as I live in England!). I share so many of your opinions and values, as does my fiance, I am constantly reading your posts to him.
When I read this post I was so excited because I’ve been feeling christmas-y for weeks but trying keep it under control for my not-so-excited fiance. After 7 days of pleading to get a little christmas spirit into our home, my explosion this evening of “Look, Emily from one lovely life has started decorating for christmas!!”, may have won him round to my early christmas enthusiasm! Thankyou!
Naomi, I hope you win the battle
Happy Christmas!
Emily, this is such a gorgeous table centerpiece, and I LOVE that you’ve gotten a jump-start on Christmas. I’m listening to “The Christmas Waltz” as I type, and I can’t wait for the holiday already! Just think – this time next year you and your husband will have a little “Santa’s helper” to enjoy it with! So happy for you. Thanks for sharing and always inspiring.
Looks beautiful! I wish that I could set up this early. But, my husband thinks that Thanksgiving gets shafted every year–so we can’t set up until after Turkey Day. But, that doesn’t mean I can’t start sneaking in the Christmas music when he’s at work!
Decorating for Christmas is different in an apartment. This so true! This is the 1st year my boyfriend and I have been living in are apartment together and I have to say it is so small already it just feels like are stuff is taking over and it is starting to look like a storage unit.. It is so hard to get into Christmas decorations when you have no room for anything. But on a more positive side where moving out next summer. Bigger apartment to share more Christmas joy. I love your ideas!
hey, i have a small, yet substantial Christmas tree complete with silver, light blue and red decorations if you guys wanna borrow it for the season. i won’t be needing it.
