PhotobucketI like things that are fancy. Dresses, painted toenails, pretty cups for my cocoa, hardback books…

It’s sort of like wearing your favorite socks. No one else can see them, but they sure make you happy inside all day long.

That’s sort of how browned butter works.

Most of us are well aware that butter is an amazing thing. Well, browned butter is caramel-y, sort of nutty, and even more incredible. It certainly made these brownies to die for and it’s the way to take a plain old batch of rice krispies treats and turn it into something…well…fancy.

These are delicious. I’ve seen several versions floating around the web and sort of made up my own by combining them. I loved the flavor of the browned butter and the slight hint of saltiness. I don’t really know what else to say about them, but I will tell you, they are best eaten with your pinkie up.

Browned Butter Rice Krispies

Ingredients
  • 8 Tbsp butter
  • 1 (10.5oz) pkg. marshmallows
  • 6c crisp rice cereal
  • coarse salt

Instructions
  1. In a large saucepan, cook butter over medium heat until golden browned. Turn heat down to low and stir in marshmallows. Continue stirring until melted and smooth.
  2. Remove from heat, stir in cereal, and add a pinch of salt. Stir until cereal is well-coated with marshmallow mixture. Press into a 8 x 8″ baking dish sprayed with nonstick spray and sprinkle with another pinch of salt.
  3. Allow to cool before slicing.

It has been ages since I’ve had a rice krispies treat… and these are like a fancy, adult version. Perfect excuse to make them!

ok, is there a VERY fine line between browned butter and BURNED butter???? because I was just starting to notice it turning a golden brown color, grabbed the mallows and then there was brown gritty stuff in my butter. i’m letting the treats cool right now, and alexa says they taste good (from licking the spoon)…so I’m not sure how they taste myself yet. Hopefully I didn’t ruin them!

You should be TOTALLY fine. It often will separate a bit when you brown the butter. Unless the entire thing is DARK brown, I think you should be right on track. Let me know what you think!
