Photobucket1. Good news: Sophie is rolling from back to front now. She’s doing it like gangbusters these days, which means she wants to keep practicing all the time. Yay!

2. Less-good news: Sophie is rolling from back to front now. She’s doing it like gangbusters these days, which means she wants to keep practicing all the time. That means when she’s in her crib for naps or at night. It’s REALLY funny, but has also made her sleep a bit tricky. She’s also inexplicably lost the ability to roll from tummy to back (which she’d been doing for about a month and a half sporadically). She’s SO pleased with herself when she makes it from back to tummy, but then gets “stuck” and gives up. She won’t even TRY to roll from tummy to back anymore. Did this happen to anyone else’s baby?

3. Her 4-month check-up went very well. She was a champ with her shots, and she’s healthy, happy, squishy girl! We’re also almost done with our allergy testing. So far, eggs have fouled out, but dairy, soy, and corn have been fine. Yay! Just a few things left to test.

4. Her love of water bottles continues. She finds them with her eyes and follows them EVERYWHERE. They’re better than any toy we have. No matter what she’s busy with, if she spots a water bottle, it has her complete attention. So funny.

5. We’re starting solids in about a week. Any tips or tricks from you moms out there? I plan on making her fruits and vegetables myself. Our pediatrician is great, but didn’t give us very much by way of specific instructions. I’m feeling a bit nervous about knowing when and how much to give. Should be an interesting transition. I can’t wait to see how she does!

Tips for the baby food: Yes do your own if you can. Start her on one or the other, and above all, take pictures of those faces. Remember that just because she doesn’t like it today may not mean she doesn’t like it tomorrow. I always tried everything 3 different times, if I got the same reaction then okay, not time for that food, but we’ll try it once more in a month.

it
s been a long time since I have done this but if I remember correctly you start with one fruit or vegetable and so everything from that color, that way if she does get sick you’ll know what it was from.

But my best advice: Be patient, take lots of pictures, and keep up the good work. She’s beautiful!

She’s SO adorable. I love her smile.

Don’t worry about the solid food stuff! It’ll be easier than you expect. It starts out just a few bites a day. Here’s a good resource.

On the rolling, Evs figured out how to do it then just stopped. For months! I was so stressed. But she had great muscle tone and eventually started rolling again, but seriously it was MONTHS. Then she got up the guts to crawl on her first birthday. Her doc just said he slowness on these things wasn’t due to poor muscle tone but just because she didn’t want to. She has a willful personality so she knows what she wants!

As far as solids. Start bland. Cereals. Then things like bananas. Appleasauce is really sour to babies. So keep stuff like that in mind.

I had a few babies that were weird about rolling over – that is completely normal. One forgot how to do tummy to back like Sophie did. Another just skipped that one, did the hard one (back to front) first, and then figured out the easy one later. All of them acted like it was my fault when they got onto their tummies, didn’t like it, and couldn’t get back over the other way. Funny!

She is so adorable! I cannot believe how chunky she is. They grow up so fast! Mine just turned 6 weeks and that time seems way too fast.

Start out with the rice cereal…give her every veggie and get her eating those good first. Then add the fruit.

Cute girl! Love her chubby cheeks and thighs. Her huge smile is darling.

My baby girl is a few days behind yours, if I remember correctly–she was born on April 27. She went through a few days where she forgot how to get from her tummy to her back (it was right after she learned to go from back to front), but she picked it up again. Our problem is that she can only roll left…so when I get her up from naps or in the morning, she has inevitably jammed herself up against the right side of the crib–always on her tummy, crying and pushing her back against the side of the crib, trying desperately to get herself back over. It’s hilarious. Hopefully she’ll learn that she can roll the other way soon. Waking up has been pretty traumatic these last few days. :)

Question: Where did you get those cute elastic headbands Sophie is always wearing? I have only found the nylon ones and really like the ones you have. I assume you can interchange clips on them like the other headbands?

The headbands are interchangeable. I got a lot of them given to me by my friend Brittany who runs an Etsy shop called Brittybird. She sells them in lots of different colors, and I do really love them. I believe she’s taking a bit of a holiday from her shop at the moment, but Etsy is a great resource for headbands, bows, and even supplies to make your own.

She’s such a doll, I love her perky cheeks! Back in the day, whenever I wanted to make sure the babes didn’t fall asleep in the car, I’d toss in a water bottle and that’d keep them wonderfully alert.

About the rolling over, maybe help her figure out how to return to her back before she gets upset/gives up- I bet with lots of practice, she’ll remember the skill, no problem.

She’s soooo adorable!

At 6 months we started my boy on rice cereal which he did not appreciate it! So we moved on to bananas and he was in love. Just a couple bites a day and he was in heaven. I made his food the majority of the time. I think doing so allows them to experience more taste than the jarred stuff (which is fine, too).

My blog has a couple detailed posts about what we did:

Have fun!

great news on the allergy testing! i’ve known a few kids who had egg allergies but grew out of them. not sure if that’s typical though. i’ve heard great things about “baby-led weaning” by gill rapley and tracey murkett. good luck!

Love all the squishy-ness! My favorite baby feeding source is wholesomebabyfood.com – lots of great tips there, including how to make your own cereals and when you might choose to start certain foods. It helped me tons with my first little one.

Oh how cute! She is really adorable. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I’m sorry about her rolling messing up her sleeping. It’s so hard, (but so normal)! Several of our kids have forgotten how to lay back down and settle after learning to sit up or stand up in their cribs. It inevitably happens that they figure it out. It’s just bumpy for the little bit of time until they figure it out.

As for the forgetting thing, normal, too. Rachel sat herself up in May while my friend was watching her one day. I didn’t see her do it for a month. The same thing happens in speech. Suddenly they’ll forget a word, then suddenly it will come back.

Baby food: A professor at BYU gave me the best advice about kid eating that I’ve ever heard–kids somehow learn to eat what is normal around them. Asian kids learn to eat Asian food, Indian kids learn to eat Indian food, etc. So don’t be too worried–at least that’s what she said. (That said, I still worry about what my kids will and won’t eat in terms of health content.) With baby food, I usually start with cereal. Then I go to vegetables. I figure that I’ve never heard a kid who didn’t learn to eat sweet stuff, but learning to eat vegetables can be tricky. So I work on those until they learn to like them. Then move onto fruits.
