1. February is over! Sophie was sick from Feb 5-Feb 27th, and then celebrated leap day by getting another tooth. That brings her tooth total from 2 at the beginning of February to 5 complete teeth & 2 in progress at the beginning of March. Fewf! She’s been putting those teeth to good use, eating mostly cut-up table foods instead of purees, which I love. Her current favorites are cut up green beans, turkey, and cheese. She also loooooves Greek yogurt, freeze-dried strawberries, and anything that looks like it might contain a carbohydrate.
2. Because she’s been so out of sorts, she’s been really tender-hearted this month, and it doesn’t take much for her to dissolve into tears, poor thing. The other day she was distracted when I walked out of the bathroom and closed the door behind me. She was sitting near the door and thought I’d gone into the bathroom and closed the door, since she didn’t see me walk out. She just completely melted down and it took several minutes for me to get her attention and prove to her that, no, I hadn’t disappeared forever. This picture basically sums it up: sweaty hair, red face, broken blood vessels around her eyes, tears, and a pouty mouth. Poor girl.
3. Luckily, Sophie forgives pretty quickly. I love that about her.

4. We’ve also been spending loads more time outside lately. Sophie prefers the rocks to the grass (she LOVES grass too, she just loves rocks). Sophie’s enjoyed playing with bubbles and Michael and I have been honing our ninja skills with keeping all the flora and fauna out of her mouth.

5. It’s time for my semi-annual “I am really tired of how I look” experience. In case you don’t remember from this post, I have very little success in the hair department and live in what I like to call the Hair Cycle of Lameness.
I want something new. I have lots of very straight, fine hair. I have zero (and I mean Z.E.R.O.) skills with a round brush. My hair WILL NOT hold curl well for longer than 2-3 hours (even with hot rollers, hairspray, curling irons, etc.).
I’d like to lose some length, but I need to be able to pull it back into a ponytail or bun without 10,000 bobby pins when I exercise or when Sophie is pulling violently on it. Also, I live in the desert where it’s very dry and we’re only a few short weeks away from hitting the triple digits. Another fun fact: I look like Prince Valiant or Sonny Bono when I have bangs. They just don’t work for me. Never have.
So, with all of those restrictions (thick, straight, fine hair that doesn’t hold curl, NO bangs, and enough length to pull into a ponytail) does anyone have any suggestions? Geesh, I don’t. And I need some. My hair appointment is next Friday.
Happy weekend!

Emily!
You are the perfect candidate for a short short due. And I am talking above the chin! You could even do a piecey (think emma watson) pixie! Oh my!! Please oh please come to MN and let me get my hands on you!
Kristy- I’m glad you commented; I was going to email you for a cyber consult! I’m not sure I’m brave enough for a pixie (I had the WORST short hair cut when I was younger) thought I do love it on Emma Watson…
Emily-
Send me a photo of you face on and I will do a REAL cyber consult with you!
I’d LOVE to!
I mean do*
Ohmygoodness, it just kills me that I don’t get to hold that sweet squishy little miss! Thank you for sharing her with us on Five Fact Fridays!
I’d love to be able to give you some advice on your hair, but I’ve got nothing. Plus, I’ve always loved your long, straight hair. What I wouldn’t give…
I have hair exactly like yours….except add thin to your description, I’ve always had it long + straight there’s not much else to do…once I had it cut off to chin level it was fun but no ponytails then ! Maybe just some highlights for fun and a good trim !!! Good Luck !!! p.s. Your little pumpkin is sooooooo cute, enjoy cuz time flies my youngest is now 18….Yikes !!!
I want to super-size that photo of Sophie with tears in her eyes. It is heart-breaking and sums up baby-hood so perfectly.
I so wish I had some hair expertise to pass along. My girls have very straight, very fine hair, and I really hope you solve the riddle, because it would help me know what to do for them!
Emily,
Before you go get your hair crop off. Check out Kate’s blog: thesmallthingsblog.com
She is a hairstylist and has some great great hair style tutorials. I have watched them all and love them. But my hair is super thick and very long.
I’m in LOVE! What a great blog!
Your hair sounds JUST like mine. And, in your pics, it reminds me a lot of my own color and texture, even. Although, my face is quite a bit fuller than yours.
I’m in a quandry because I live in Seattle–so, even if my hair WANTED to hold curl, I’d be out of luck because of the constant drizzle. In the past, I have permed my hair–which I actually really liked. It gave it some body, allowed it to hold curl, and I could pin it up into a cute curly bun thing really easily. (Hmm…maybe I should do that again…) But, my favorite style is a very short (chin-length) layered “bob.” I wish I had a good pic to send to you. My hair is now down to my shoulder blades because, after 7 years of marriage, my husband FINALLY commented that he likes it long.
(I’ve been asking his opinion for all of those 7 years, so I was happy to oblige.) While I have NO round brush skills with my long hair, I found that I could use one when my hair was short…or I would roll my hair in larger velcro rollers and then blow it dry. That way, you can just have it all “round brushing” at once and don’t have to worry about holding the brush a certain way while trying to use a blow dryer with the other hand and pulling a toddler off your leg simultaneously. I hope you find a cut that you love!
You know, I’ve heard there are looser perms you can get that aren’t like the tiny tight ones of the ’90s. My sister recommended I try it. I haven’t been brave enough yet. I’m glad to hear you liked a bob–I’ve been thinking of doing a longer bob (so I can pull it at least some of the way back). I’ve also been interested in trying the velcro rollers. I’ll have to look for some. Thanks for the tips!
I don’t have much advice for you in the haircut department; I love long hair and have had it all my life. I do, however, have a suggestion for curling your hair. Have your ever tried Pillow Curlers? You can get them at Target (or Amazon.com) and they are fabulous. At night, wash your hair and let it dry about 70 % of the way, then roll your hair in the pillow curlers. They are soft and squishy, so you can sleep in them. When you wake up in the morning, you have beautiful curls! I have long, thick hair that doesn’t usually hold curl, and when I use the pillow curlers, my curls last all day!
Jordyn- I haven’t tried them since I was little. I’ll have to see if I can find some larger ones. The ones I used when I was little were tiny and, when brushed (yikes), turned cuh-razy! I’ll have to look for bigger ones next time I’m at Target. Thanks for the tip!
I have your hair but brown. It doesn’t even hold a perm so I gave up on all the chemicals. I have resorted to layers and the highlights or a complete color change. Having layers took a lot of the thickness out of my hair and by just curling the ends it gave me a nice style. Short hair cuts are for the brave…I’m not that brave and although I see bangs making a comeback in waves I’m not that brave either. Bangs were not for me. Talk with your stylist. They are great at examining facial features and complexions and will be able to give you a nice recommendation.
Swoop bangs and long layers like Mary Kate Olsen!

Omg, the picture of your crying baby is heartbreaking. I have a 4 months old daughter and maybe having a baby turned me into a real softy. I am glad that babys forgive and forget and laugh 10 minutes later. Ok, I need to go and find a tissue.
Sorry, no help in the hair department. Mine is curly, thick and does what it wants. Always has, always will be. I gave up and let it grow and then call a friend to cut it short any way she wants to lol.
Your darling daughter…wow…such a cutey. The adventures one can have with a little one and keeping them from putting EVERYTHING in their mouth is amazing!! LOL Enjoy each moment…time flies quickly.
My first thought on your hair quest was short and pixie as well – its just hair, it grows out! It would not need to be pulled back, would be super easy to wash and wear…especially with a little one.
I have curly hair (don’t hate me), and have recently went from long hair to shorter and shorter. I am loving it, the ease of not doing a thing but putting some product in it, way less time washing and drying. I didn’t go from long to super short in one step though…went up gradually with the help of my awesome stylist. Now its like Meg Ryan short and curly and I love it! Give it try…and post those pics of you when you finally decide! Good luck!
While at my stylists, I saw a picture of a new kind of ‘permanent’ for long hair which was just soft rolly curls and it was darling! If I had long hair, I would LOVE to wear that style for a few months. (a permanent is actually only a ‘temporary’ according to my mother)
