A peek inside my makeup bag.
From every day easy to date night glam, here are a few of my favorites.
I don’t know what it is. I’m turning 30 this fall, and it’s only really been in the last year or two that I feel like I’m coming into myself as far as clothes, hair, and make-up go. I’ve narrowed down my wardrobe focus, I’ve finally (finally!) figured out a way of curling my hair that lasts all day (spoiler: it’s a curling wand), and I feel like my makeup routine is getting figured out.
My skin is getting a little more…shall we say, grown up? I also sustained some pretty serious 2nd degree burns last year, so my makeup situation is different than it ever has been before. Here’s a peek into my makeup bag…
Just the basics – this is my basic natural makeup look (plus a little mascara)
BB Cream, CC Cream & Concealer
I’ve been a BB Cream fan since it came out a few years ago and I was a tinted moisturizer girl before that. I’ve found my skin doesn’t do well with foundation and since I have freckles, I don’t really feel like myself if they’re all completely covered up. With BB or CC Cream, my skin tone evens out and I feel like I get a little glow.
My current CC Cream is Smashbox CC Cream. It’s the priciest one I’ve ever tried, but it was recommended to me for my scarring. I’ve really liked it, but when my Smashbox runs out, I’m going to pick up the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, which is a little lighter (and less expensive). I’ve also liked Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream in the past, and I sometimes mix it in with my CC Cream to make it last longer.
I prime my eye area with Urban Decay anti-aging eyeshadow primer (even though I almost never use eyeshadow). As the girl at Sephora told me, “anti-aging is probably a good thing for you.” She’s right. I already have some eye crinkles going on, but the real reason I use this stuff is that it makes under-eye concealer blend in like a dream. For my under-eye circles (thank you, genetics) and my burn scarring, my favorite concealer is NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. Works like a charm and blends in remarkably well. It’s my all-time favorite.
Bronzer, Blush & Highlighter
Even though I go super light-coverage on the foundation layer with my BB/CC Creams, I like the way my face looks with a little color and highlight, especially at the tail end of winter when I feel like a ghost. I use a bit of Sonia Kashuk bronzer (from Target) near my hairline and the hollows of my cheeks (like you see in some contouring tutorials), a little BECCA highlighter on the tops of my cheeks (I sometimes dot a little on my eyelids or down the center of my nose), and finish with a pop of blush, which I feel like wakes up my whole face.
My favorite blushes are Tarte Amazonian Clay (which lasts really well in heat and throughout the day) and NARS (which are all awkwardly named but work like a dream). I’ve found that the blush and highlighter last FOREVER so I feel like they’re very much worth the expense. Sonia Kashuk bronzer has been working for me for years, so till I find something I like better, I’m sticking with it!
Brows & Lashes
I’ve been filling in my eyebrows since before it was The Thing To Do, and I’ve always appreciated how it looks. I’ve got dark blonde hair naturally (though I do balyage highlights these days), and my eyebrows look really strange if they’re filled in too dark.
My favorite budget brow pencil is CoverGirl Blonde Pencil. Early last year, I got onto Anastasia Brow Wiz brow pencil in taupe and it is WAY easier to work with. I love it and it’s been my go to ever since. I’ve also been using Anastasia brow gel which sounds high maintenance, but keeps my brows exactly where I want them during the day no matter how many blankets or stuffed animals are rubbed or tossed into my face by children throughout the day. I only use a teeny bit and it lasts a long time.
As for lashes, I’ve mentioned this before, but Lights Camera Lashes mascara is my favorite. I like it better than any 3D mascara or traditional mascara I’ve tried. I think that short of lash extensions, this is the longest my lashes will ever look. Love it forever. Runner up is the Younique 3D lash mascara.
If I’m feeling brave – a little bright pop of bordeaux on my lips.
So, I LOVE seeing bold, beautiful lip color on other people. In fact, it’s the make-up look I most wish I felt comfortable in. But, for the most part, I don’t love it on myself. Instead, I favor something that keeps my lips covered without making me feel self-conscious that it’s smeared or on my teeth. Most days I go for plain mint balm (EOS or Honest brand) or Bobbi Brown Pink Beige Lip Gloss. The gloss lasts a long time and feels polished without much effort.
For those moments I DO feel bold enough to try some color, my favorite (favorite favorite FAVORITE) is Smashbox Lip Stain in Bordeaux/Dark-Plum. The product photo makes it look pretty purple, but it looks like this on–a deep, rich red that fades to a more berry color.
