Five Fact Friday – From Sophie’s pseudo principal’s office to Milo’s man-shouting in church, it’s been a WEEK! Here a few bits and bites before we head into the weekend…
She nodded, then grabbed a few pieces of paper and some washi tape and left. A few minutes later, she had rearranged her bedroom and dragged in a play table to be her desk, carefully arranging her pens, paper, clock, a lamp, and more.
The note on the door changes every few days–sometimes, it simply says “Sophie’s Office.” Other times, it says ominous things like “only questions or bad,” meaning “you only come here (like the principal’s office) if you have questions or if you’re in trouble.” And she’s totally stuck to the bit. “See ya! I’m going to go work on some crafts in my office!”
I sometimes get asked about teaching my kids to read. I wish I had a better answer for you. Short answer: I haven’t ever actively done anything to teach Sophie to read. Long answer: I came from parents who both love to read. Without really ever pushing it on us, they passed along the love. It was something I saw them doing, my mom read lots of books to us when we were little, and they used it as a reward (you could stay up an extra 30 minutes to read, etc.). I’ve been an avid reader since I learned how.
My approach with Milo and Sophie has been much the same. I don’t make them read, and I haven’t ever actively taught them to read, other than to support learning letter sounds and sounding out words (Milo still doesn’t know all his letter sounds and isn’t close to reading). I read a lot of picture books to them, and always try to choose books with subjects they like (which means lots of car books for Milo), and good illustrations. She has largely come to this point on her own, and it’s maybe the luckiest parenting break I’ve ever had.
I hope you have a lovely weekend planned, whether that’s doing lots of things, or relaxing at home. The weekly newsletter is headed out tonight around 6pm MST, and I’m going LIVE on Facebook with Sprouts IN MY HOUSE(!!!) today around 3pm MST. I’d LOVE it if you’d join us! I’ll be making three dessert recipes live, plus there is a $100 gift card and a goodie basket to give away.
Happy Weekend, dear reader!
Wishing you every good thing!
