Photos are like little bottled up moments of time.
They make the best Mother’s Day Gift!
I come from two parents who hate attention and gifts. It makes holidays and gift-giving occasions more than a little tricky. Their three favorite gifts are A) nothing, B) a subtle, but passing expression of celebration and C) really, really nothing.
So, many years growing up, we’d do our best to get some sibling pictures together for my mom. She always acted happy to get them even when we ended up with something cheesy or semi-awkward (I’m looking at you 13 year old Emily with braces). Now that we all live spread so far away from each other, we still find that photos are one of the best ways to feel connected.
I feel much the same way now that I’m a mom myself. I don’t really need much in the way of gifts to open, but there are few things I love quite so much as pictures of my children. It’s the reason that Five Fact Friday is the funnest post of the week to put together. It’s the reason that on nights when everyone has pushed me twelve miles past my limit during the day, I scroll through photos of my kids and suddenly I can face getting up and doing it all over again in the morning.
Whether they’re official family pictures with a photographer or just in-the-moment snaps on my phone, those pictures are the ways I remember what it’s like now. In this moment. In this season. Like the way that they laugh at silly jokes or the way Milo never EVER leaves home without his sunglasses. But always, those photos help me capture the moment.
So, I got the kids matching outfits and we set out to take some pictures so we can send them to grandmas (and I can print some for myself) for Mother’s Day. I picked these up at Gymboree. I love that I can find coordinating outfits for Milo and Sophie even though they’re buying from opposite sections of the store (boys and girls). Plus, the quality is good enough that we almost always out-grow something before we wear it out, making it perfect for handing down to our adorable cousins.
These are nowhere near as professional and put-together as the ones my friend Abbie did last fall, but they still make my mama heart all kinds of happy. These are my children. This is the season we’re in. It’s crazy and wonderful and hard and fast and slow all in the same moment. The headband obsession (Sophie) and flip-flop tan lines (Milo) and the completely kissable cheeks (both) won’t last forever, but the pictures hopefully will.
Gymboree is celebrating Mother’s Day with a One Big Happy campaign encouraging moms to focus on what makes them feel happy right now. I’d love to hear your answers!
What is something about motherhood (or being an auntie, friend, or cousin) that you love in this season?
Shout it out in the comments, then head over to Gymboree to check out their adorable spring line. Because A) most things are on sale, B) there’s nothing cuter than matching outfits (or jammies!) and C) Mother’s Day is right around the corner!
