Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE a good old-fashioned lemonade recipe to beat the heat in the summertime. Yes, even the kind with sugar or simple syrup. Classic lemonade is delicious!

But! When I want to make homemade lemonade without refined sugar, I’m a big fan of using honey or agave! You still get that delicious sweetness and you can skip the white sugar/granulated sugar.

Take our berry lemonade recipe, for example. This easy honey-sweetened lemonade recipe combines fresh berries with fresh lemon juice, honey (or agave), and water for a simple, delicious cold drink you can enjoy on hot summer days! It’s so good you might want to make a double batch.

This delicious recipe is refreshing, beautiful, and so easy to make! Let’s dive in…

ingredients for honey berry lemonade

Simple Ingredients To Start

One of the best parts of making your own lemonade from scratch is that you get to choose the ingredients! (No artificial flavors or extras here!) This simple lemonade starts with just a few basic ingredients, like:

  • Fresh Lemon Juice. For best results, I do NOT recommend bottled lemon juice for making homemade lemonade. Fresh-squeezed lemonade made with the juice of fresh lemons will taste WAY better. Trust. (Pro tip: a citrus squeezer works SO well for this!)
  • Fresh (or Frozen) Berries. Next up, you’ll need some berries. I like a mixture of strawberries and blueberries (or strawberries, raspberries & blueberries), but feel free to use all of one berry or a mix of your favorites.
  • Honey. I recommend a light-tasting honey. Any variety you like will work, whether it’s local honey, raw honey, or brands you can find at the grocery store. I just recommend lighter-tasting honey when possible.
  • Water. Next, you’ll need some water. Filtered water is fine–whatever you drink!
  • Ice Cubes. A few cups of ice is a MUST for an ice cold glass of lemonade!

Star Ingredient: Honey

A few notes here. Honey WILL add a flavor to the lemonade. I find it’s really delicious paired with berries and fresh lemons, but you WILL be able to taste the honey flavor.

Different types of honey have different flavors, but I recommend a light-tasting honey (like a light clover honey or orange blossom honey), but even then, you are going to taste it in the lemonade.

If that makes you nervous, feel free to swap in agave syrup. This natural sweetener is much more neutral in flavor and will let the lemon and berry flavors shine through.

How To Make Honey Sweetened Berry lemonade, Step By Step

As always, you can find the full recipe with ingredient amounts, step-by-step instructions, tips, and more in the recipe card below.

  1. Dissolve Honey. Heat 1 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium heat on the stove or in the microwave until warm (not boiling). Add honey to the hot water and stir to dissolve completely.
  2. Pulse To Combine. Add dissolved honey mixture to a blender along with lemon juice and berries. Pulse to break up the berries (no need to fully puree).
  3. Mix In Water. Stir in remaining cold water and stir to combine. Transfer lemonade mixture to a large pitcher with 2-3 cups of ice or pour into glasses full of ice.
  4. Garnish. If desired, garnish with more fresh berries, fresh mint, lemon wedge, lemon slices, etc.

Fun Variation: Fresh Herbs

Hear me out: I love making this easy honey lemonade recipe with fresh herbs! Fresh mint or fresh basil are both good options. They pair so nicely with the tart lemon flavor and the sweet berry taste of fresh strawberries and blueberries.

It sounds crazy, but it WORKS. Feel free to start small with just a sprig/leaf or two in each glass. Otherwise, you can muddle some into the bottom of your pitcher for a stronger flavor.

FAQ + Tips And Tricks For The Best Honey Berry Lemonade

Ice, Ice, Baby! This lemonade is fairly strong, since it’s intended to be served over ice, which will melt and dilute the flavor. If you’re not adding ice, or find that it’s too concentrated a flavor for you, just add more water or sparkling water till you hit your sweet spot.

Try It Sparkly! For a bubbly version, try making this house-made lemonade with unsweetened sparkling water instead of water. It’s a fizzy and fun change of pace!

Pack it To Go! This refreshing homemade lemonade recipe can easily be packed up to go for picnics, backyard barbecues, or potlucks. I love to pour it into mason jars, so I can seal it with lids. Less spilling!

Notes

  • Frozen or Fresh. You can use either frozen berries or fresh berries for this recipe. We recommend 2 cups of fruit. You can choose from strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Mix and match your favorites!
  • Honey VS Agave. You will likely be able to taste the honey in this recipe. I think that’s part of its charm, but if you want a more neutral flavor, we recommend agave syrup. (I do NOT recommend maple syrup)
  • Try It With Sparkling Water! For a fizzy finish, use sparkling water instead.
