Gather Your Ingredients

One thing that makes this creamy tomato pasta recipe so great is the simple ingredients list. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Ingredients for tomato cream sauce
  • Butter. We’re starting with butter, though olive oil also works here. It’s a great way to cook the garlic and add delicious flavor while we’re at it. I use salted butter, but unsalted butter is great, too.
  • A Little Garlic + Some Simple Seasonings. Fresh garlic cloves paired with kosher salt, black pepper, and Italian Seasoning add depth and flavor to this creamy tomato sauce. (Don’t keep Italian Seasoning on hand? Make our Homemade Italian Seasoning with the herbs & spices in your pantry!)
  • Tomato Paste & Tomato Sauce. This duo adds rich notes of tomato and helps thicken the sauce so you get a velvety texture even before adding in the cream.
  • Heavy Cream & Parmesan Cheese. Then, at the end of cooking, we’ll stir in the heavy whipping cream and freshly grated parmesan cheese for richness and umami. These flavors are unbeatable!
  • Gluten-Free Pasta. This tomato cream sauce recipe is naturally gluten-free, so all we need to keep this dish celiac-safe is some gluten-free pasta to serve it with. My favorite pasta for this dish is Jovial brown rice spirals (rotini) or another small pasta shape, like farfalle (bowties).

FAQ + Tips And Tricks For The Best Creamy Tomato Sauce

START PASTA FIRST. Start by bringing the water to a boil for the pasta, since this will take the longest. You can prep the tomato cream sauce while you wait for the pasta water to boil!

ROUND OUT THE MEAL WITH SOME PROTEIN! Feel free to add some chicken sausage to this, if you like. An easy way (and my favorite way!) to add protein is to serve it with a side of chicken. We rub 1 pound of chicken tenders with 1 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp. paprika, and 1/2 tsp. salt, then air fry at 375 for 15ish minutes or until the tenders are done. (You get another 22 grams of protein!)

ADD SOMETHING GREEN. To round out the meal even more, try serving a side salad or a green veggie like zucchini, seasoned green beans, or parmesan broccoli!

THIN OUT THE SAUCE. This creamy tomato sauce is meant to be thick, but if you want a thinner sauce, you can add a ladleful of the pasta water before draining the pasta! (Or, use 12 oz of pasta instead of 8 oz.)

EXTRAS TO TRY. Feel free to dress this up with some fresh herbs (like fresh basil!), a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for warmth, or a garnish of black pepper or a little bit of extra parmesan cheese.
