I’ll just say it: pizza night is the BEST night.

We’ve been having a GREAT time with all kinds of gluten-free pizzas over the last few months, trying new combinations, and making some classics. Though this one is definitely controversial (not everyone is a pineapple fan!), I’m guessing you’re here because you are on Team Pineapple On Pizza. Me too!

Made with our homemade pizza dough, this gluten-free Hawaiian pizza recipe is jam-packed with ham & pineapple, but we also like to add another delicious topping that you takes this pizza to the next level…

Simple Ingredients To Start

So what is on Hawaiian pizza? The main toppings are ham and pineapple or bacon and pineapple. But let’s take a look at everything you’ll need for this recipe:

  • Gluten-Free Pizza Dough. We’re gluten-free so we’re starting with our homemade gluten-free pizza crust. Otherwise, you’ll need a 12-inch pizza crust (store-bought, or homemade!)
  • Olive Oil. We’ll use olive oil to shape the pizza dough, and brush a bit on the crust at the end for a prettier look.
  • Pizza Sauce. Use your favorite store-bought or homemade pizza sauce. Red sauce is a must here!
  • Mozzarella Cheese. You’ll need plenty of mozzarella cheese!
  • Ham. Use whatever ham you like, whether it’s leftover ham from the holidays, some diced ham steak, or even deli ham! (You can also use Canadian bacon)
  • Pineapple. I love fresh pineapple the most, but we’ve also made it with canned & frozen pineapple in a pinch (see the recipe notes or FAQ for tips!)
  • Bacon. Some Hawaiian pizza recipes use just ham or just bacon, but I find the BEST Hawaiian pizza has both. So, we’re going for it! Smoky, crispy bacon is just the perfect finishing touch!
  • Some Goodies On Top. Then, you’ll finish this ham & pineapple pizza with salt, pepper, and your favorite extras–parmesan, oregano, parsley, red pepper flakes, etc.

Pro Tip: Try Our Homemade Dough!

If you’re used to the sad, cardboard-like gluten-free pizza crust you’ve found at the grocery store, our Soft, Chewy Homemade Gluten-Free Pizza Dough recipe is going to change your life! It’s remarkably easy to make (just 5 ingredients!), and the dough can even be made ahead and frozen for later. You’ll need this flour blend from Amazon to make it–one bag can make 4 crusts, which averages out to $3-3.75 per crust!

  3. Spread With Sauce. Carefully, spread 1/3-1/2 cup pizza sauce onto the pre-baked crust, leaving a small border around the edge.
  4. Add Toppings. Sprinkle with 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese. Top with ham, pineapple, and bacon. Add 1/2 cup remaining mozzarella cheese.
  5. Bake Pizza in preheated oven for 12-14 minutes, or until the crust is just golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbling.
  6. Garnish. If desired, brush the freshly baked crust with olive oil. Sprinkle with dried or fresh parsley, a pinch of coarse salt, and a little black pepper on top of the pizza. Feel free to add additional garnish, such as parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes, a little oregano, or green onions, to taste.

Variations & Extra Toppings To Try

So now that you know how to make gluten-free Hawaiian pizza, let’s talk about variations! One of the best parts of making homemade pizza is getting to choose your own toppings, so here a few twists to try next time you’ve got a craving:

  • Bacon. Just throwing this out there one more time…bacon makes for AMAZING Hawaiian pizza!
  • Green Onion. For a touch of freshness, green onions can be a great option. You can add them along with the ham, pineapple, and bacon, or sprinkle them on right at the end.
  • Jalapeños. Love a little heat? Try some fresh or pickled jalapeño slices on top! (Pickled jalapeños are GREAT here–spicy and tangy and lovely with the pineapple.)
  • Caramelized Onions. If you have the time to make them, caramelized onions add a rich, deep, luxurious flavor note that’s tough to beat!
  • Olives. If you’re an olive fan, I love to add a little black olive to this ham and pineapple pizza!

FAQ + Tips And Tricks For The Best Hawaiian Pizza

Can I Use Another Gluten-Free Crust? Yes. While we recommend our homemade pizza crust any time you can make it, you can use store-bought gluten-free pizza dough (like Trader Joe’s or Manini’s), or you can use a pre-made gluten-free pizza crust, like Schar, Udi’s, etc. You can even use cauliflower crust, if you like it.

Try A Pizza Pan! Sheet pans will absolutely work, but if you make a lot of pizza, like we do, we can’t recommend these pizza pans enough. They’re easy to clean, cook evenly, and they’re easy to store. They make REALLY good pizza, even without a pizza stone. Win-win-win!

Can I Use Frozen Pineapple or Canned Pineapple For Hawaiian Pizza? Yes! Fresh pineapple will give you the freshest flavor, but you can absolutely use canned pineapple tidbits or frozen pineapple instead. If using canned pineapple, drain as much liquid as possible to avoid making the pizza soggy. To use frozen pineapple, thaw the pineapple first to avoid adding extra liquid to the pizza.

Notes

  • Gluten-Free Pizza Dough. We highly recommend our gluten-free pizza dough for taste and texture. If you’re using a store-bought gluten-free pizza crust, you can skip the par-baking step, unless it’s recommended on your crust packaging. Not gluten-free? Feel free to use regular pizza dough. .
  • Can I Use Another Gluten-Free Crust? Yes. You can use store-bought gluten-free pizza dough (like Trader Joe’s or Manini’s), or you can use a pre-made gluten-free pizza crust. I do NOT recommend cauliflower crust for this recipe, since the toppings are a bit more substantial and heavy. I find that cauliflower crust can’t stand up to the toppings well.
  • Can I Use Frozen Pineapple or Canned Pineapple For Hawaiian Pizza? Yes! Fresh pineapple will give you the freshest flavor, but you can absolutely use canned pineapple or frozen pineapple instead. If using canned pineapple, drain as much liquid as possible to avoid making the pizza soggy. To use frozen pineapple, thaw the pineapple first to avoid adding extra liquid to the pizza.
  • Extra Toppings To Try. Feel free to match extra toppings, like caramelized onion, jalapeños, olives, or green onion!

  1. I know pineapple on pizza can be divisive, but this Hawaiian pizza makes a strong argument in favor of it as a pizza topping. The pineapple adjust a soft sweetness that I can’t get enough of. My family went on a huge Hawaiian pizza kick because of this pizza.

  2. I wasn’t sure about Hawaiian pizza until I tried this. Now it’s one of my absolute favorite pizzas and YOU NEED TO TRY IT TOO!!!!
