Gather Your Ingredients

One thing you’ll LOVE about this chicken parmesan burger recipe is the simple ingredients list. Let’s take a look:

Ingredients for chicken parmesan burgers
  • Ground Chicken Breast. I use ground chicken breast rather than regular ground chicken, since it’s leaner, higher in protein, and more neutral in flavor. It works really well for these chicken burgers.
  • Parmesan Cheese + Mozzarella Cheese. This cheesy duo adds delicious flavors inside and on top of the burgers. That bubbly, melty mozzarella cheese is so great here!
  • Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs. Store-bought gluten-free bread crumbs work beautifully. If you can’t find them or don’t have any on hand, you can make these homemade gluten-free bread crumbs with whatever gluten-free bread you have on hand!
  • Fresh Basil + Fresh Garlic. For beautiful, savory flavor.
  • Kosher Salt, Black Pepper & Italian Seasoning. These pantry staples add delicious flavor without a lot of fuss. We especially love them with our homemade Italian seasoning!
  • Marinara Sauce. Rao’s is our favorite, but homemade marinara sauce or any brand you like (or that’s on sale!) will work great.
  • A Little Olive Oil For Cooking. Just a bit to help crisp the burgers.
  • Optional: Our Garlic Bread Buns! While you can totally serve these on plain gluten-free hamburger buns, you can take them to the next level with our garlic bread buns, made with gluten-free hamburger buns, butter, garlic, and parsley. Toasting them with butter makes the buns sturdier and more resilient!

How To Make Chicken Parmesan Burgers, Step By Step

As always, you can find the full recipe with ingredient amounts, detailed instructions, and tips in the recipe card below.

Making chicken parmesan burger patties, step by step
  1. MAKE THE BURGER MIXTURE. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine ground chicken breast, parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, basil, garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Gently mix with a fork or your hands until just combined, trying not to over-mix or overly compact the chicken mixture.
  2. SHAPE & BROWN BURGERS. Divide the burger mixture into 4 equal sections and shape each into a patty just larger than the size of your bun (since they’ll shrink a bit during cooking). Slightly indent the center of each burger. Heat 1-2 TBSP oil in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the butters 4-5 min per side, or until golden brown. Make sure to heat the oil in the skillet before adding the burgers, so they’re less likely to stick!
Making gluten-free garlic bread buns for chicken parmesan burgers, step by step
  1. WHILE CHICKEN COOKS, PREP BUNS. In a small bowl, combine softened butter, garlic, and parsley and stir until evenly blended. Open each bun and spread garlic butter on the cut side of each half of the buns. Place buns on a sheet pan. Bake 8-10 min in preheated oven to toast buns.
  2. TO FINISH BURGERS ON THE STOVE (FASTER). Remove browned burgers from the pan. Add 1 ⅓ cup marinara sauce to the saucepan and stir to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Return burgers to the pan and top with the remaining ⅓ cup marinara sauce. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer 4-5 min. Top each burger with ¼ cup grated mozzarella cheese and cook covered another 4-5 min or until the cheese melts and the interior of the burgers has reached 165 degrees F on a meat thermometer.

FAQ + Tips And Tricks For The Best Chicken Parmesan Burgers

IN A HURRY? AIR FRY THEM! If you’re in a hurry, you can air fry the burgers at 375 for 12-15 min, then top with cheese and cook another 1-2 min. Serve with marinara sauce. It’s not quite as good, but great in a pinch!

MAKE THIS DINNER LIGHTER. Skip the garlic bread buns and serve with a side of Arugula Salad or our Gluten-Free Caesar Salad instead! Or, just add a side of seasoned green beans or serve over spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles.

CAN I USE GROUND TURKEY INSTEAD? If you like the flavor, you can absolutely use ground turkey to make turkey burgers instead. I just don’t personally care for the flavor. I haven’t tested these with ground beef yet.

Make-Ahead Tips

  • PREP THE BURGERS AHEAD. The burger mixture can be mixed up in the morning so it’s ready to go that night. Or, you can assemble all the way through the first part of step 4. Cover the pan and refrigerate instead of baking, then remove the pan from the fridge while you preheat the oven later and bake as directed.
  • PREP THE BUNS AHEAD. You can also make the garlic butter and spread it on the buns in advance. When I do this, I set them on a sheet pan in the fridge until I’m ready to bake, so they’re ready to go right into the oven later!
