This easy comeback sauce recipe is a great way to add BIG flavor to your favorite meals. Once you try it, you’ll want to put it on EVERYTHING!!

What is comeback sauce? Glad you asked.
This delicious dipping sauce has been a staple across the Southern United States for 100 years! Invented in the 1920s by Greek restauranteur Alex Dennery for his Mississippi restaurant The Rotisserie, classic Southern Comeback Sauce has seen countless variations over the years, but it has a few key features:
- It’s almost a cross between Thousand Island Dressing + Cajun remoulade sauce. It’s got the same creamy texture and pinkish hue, but with a delicious kick.
- It’s got ALL THE FLAVORS. Seriously. It’s sweet, spicy, tangy, salty AND has a touch of umami. This combination of delicious flavors seems to light up all your taste buds! (I think that’s what keeps us coming back for more when we eat it!)
- It’s a SUPER versatile sauce. While it’s been served as a topping with Saltine crackers at restaurants (in place of a bread basket), comeback sauce is also served on lettuce, with chicken, fried foods, and basically anything else you can think of! (More on this in a minute!)
And, the best part is, homemade comeback sauce starts with just a few simple ingredients…

Simple Ingredients To Start
One thing I love about this ingredient list is that it’s all pantry staples! I pretty much always have these ingredients on hand, so it’s easy to make a batch of Mississippi Comeback sauce any time the craving hits! Let’s take a look:
- Mayo. Yep. This creamy dipping sauce starts with a base of mayonnaise. Use good-quality mayo for the best texture and flavor!
- Ketchup. It’s a classic! The sweet, tangy notes lighten up the texture in this delicious sauce and adds great flavor!
- Hot Sauce. Different comeback sauce recipes use different types & brands, but we make ours with Frank’s Red Hot. It’s easy to find, has simple ingredients, and adds a great kick to this yummy sauce.
- Worcestershire Sauce. For umami! If you’re gluten-free like us, make sure to use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce! (In a pinch, you can use half balsamic vinegar + half tamari/soy sauce, but Worcestershire sauce will give you the best flavor!)
- Garlic Powder. For a savory, aromatic note.
- Black Pepper. Another way to add some kick. We love freshly ground black pepper for the best flavor & to add visual interest to the sauce, but whatever you have will work!

12 Ways To Use Comeback Sauce
TBH, you can eat this tangy comeback sauce with just about anything. (Really.) These days, it’s seen on everything from fish tacos to fried tomatoes to iceberg lettuce, but here are a few of the ways we recommend trying this famous sauce:
- Crispy Chicken. Baked chicken tenders, chicken nuggets, fried chicken, you name it! Comeback sauce + chicken are a match made in heaven.
- Burgers. Swap your regular burger sauce or special sauce for a schmear of comeback sauce instead! The flavors are incredible with beef burgers, veggie burgers, and chicken burgers!
- Roasted Broccoli. Maybe unconventional, but I LOVE serving comeback sauce with Air Fryer Broccoli or roasted broccoli. Those crispy edges are delicious with the creamy sauce. (And a bit lighter than fries or deep-fried foods!)
- French Fries. This is the perfect condiment for fries of all kinds. From Crispy Baked Sweet Potato Fries to Spicy Potato Wedges to classic French fries…they’re all good with comeback sauce! (Same goes for onion rings!)
- Crab Cakes. A classic. Swap traditional remoulade sauce or tartar sauce out for Comeback sauce. It’s delicious. (Salmon cakes also work!)
- Shrimp. Grilled shrimp, fried shrimp, and baked shrimp are all delicious with this savory sauce!
- Crackers. This is the original way to serve Comeback sauce! Some restaurants still serve Saltines + comeback sauce as an appetizer (in place of a bread basket!).
- Salad. Try it as a salad dressing on a wedge salad or classic green salad for some kick!
- Potatoes. Beyond just french fries, you can also drizzle this southern-style sauce over a baked potato, serve with roasted potatoes, or dollop over crispy smashed potatoes!
- Sandwiches. Or, swap mayo + mustard on your sandwich for this sauce for some heat. It’s delicious with turkey, but some folks even use it on Reubens in place of Thousand Island/Russian Dressing!
- Fish. Comeback sauce adds zippy flavor in place of classic tartar sauce. Baked fish, fish sticks, fried fish..even fish tacos…it all works!
- Crudites. Swap out a traditional vinaigrette or ranch dressing for classic Comeback sauce at your next party or cookout. It’ll be a hit!

FAQ + Tips And Tricks For The Best Comeback Sauce
Why Do They Call It Comeback Sauce? There are several theories, but the most popular is that people keep coming back for more when they try it! That theory seems to hold true! Many popular chicken restaurants have modeled their famous chicken dipping sauces after classic comeback sauce.
Hot Sauce. You can swap in your favorite hot sauce here. Some people make their comeback sauce with Sriracha, others use Tabasco, Heinz chili sauce or other hot sauces.
Tone Down The Heat. If you’re nervous about the spice level, you can make this comeback sauce mild by using 3 Tablespoons ketchup and 1 Tablespoon Frank’s Red Hot instead of 2 Tablespoons each. It’ll cut the heat in half! (Already made it and need to town down the heat? Try a little honey or a little bit of agave syrup!)
