What time is it? It’s CRISPY BAKED SWEET POTATO FRIES TIME!!!

I didn’t grow up eating a ton of sweet potatoes, other than sweet potato casserole at Thanksgiving, but once we went gluten free, sweet potatoes became a regular part of our diet. And I LOVE THEM.

We eat them all kinds of ways–stuffed, mashed, roasted, and so much more. But crispy oven sweet potato fries are one of our absolute favorites. We have these a few times a month because they’re always such a win.

I love that baked sweet potato fries go with so many different main dishes (see the ideas below for some of our faves!), and our favorite fry seasoning can be kept on hand for extra batches whenever the mood strikes.

Sometimes, sweet potato fries just don’t get *quite* as crisp as you want them, but I‘ve figured out a few secrets that make AMAZINGLY crisp baked sweet potato fries every time.

I’m ready to spill all my sweet potato secrets with you, so here’s all you need to get started on this easy recipe…

Sweet Potato Fry Seasoning

Start With Simple Ingredients

Great news: the BEST sweet potato fries start with simple ingredients! Let’s take a look:

  • First Up: Our Favorite Sweet Potato Fry Seasoning. I’ve tweaked my sweet potato fry seasoning over the years and settled on a mix of pantry staples that give me smoky, savory, delicious flavor every time. I’ve intentionally written the recipe big enough to help you keep a little stash of seasoning on hand so it’s easy to whip up a batch of these baked sweet potato fries any time. You’ll need paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, black pepper, smoked paprika, celery salt, and a pinch of cayenne pepper or chipotle chili power.
  • Sweet Potatoes. Next up, you’ll (obviously) need sweet potatoes! I love red garnet sweet potatoes because of their deep orange color and gorgeous texture. Cut them into 1/2″ inch thick sticks for even cooking.
  • Olive oil. I love the flavor good olive oil adds to oven sweet potato fries. Our go-to is Queen Creek Olive Mill’s balanced oil for its amazing flavor. (Not sponsored, just a small business shout-out to a brand I love!)
  • Arrowroot or Cornstarch. A secret ingredient! If you can, add cornstarch (gluten-free) or arrowroot (paleo, whole30) to your baked sweet potato fries to help them develop a really nice crisp coating.

How To Make Baked Sweet Potato Fries, Step By Step

As always, you can find the full recipe, with ingredient amounts, detailed instructions, and tips in the recipe card below!

  1. First, Mix Up The Fry Seasoning. In a bowl or jar, combine paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, cumin, pepper, smoked paprika, and celery salt. Whisk to combine or cover the jar with a lid and shake to combine well. Store fry seasoning in an airtight jar or container with a lid up to 1 year. (This recipe makes enough for several batches of fries)
  2. Preheat The Oven. Next, preheat the oven temperature to 400 degrees while you slice & prep the sweet potatoes.
  3. Prep The Fries. In a large bowl, combine sweet potato wedges, 2 Tbsp. oil, and 2 tsp. fry seasoning. Stir to combine until well coated, adding more oil, if needed so the fries are all well coated. If using, mix in cornstarch or arrowroot and stir until fries are well coated and no powdery sections remain. Spread seasoned sweet potato wedges out on a large baking sheet in a single layer, trying not to overlap the potatoes.
  4. Bake Fries. Bake on a center rack at 400 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are crisp and browned, flipping every 15 minutes for even browning. (The exact baking time will depend on your oven & how thick or thin your fries are.) Enjoy immediately with ketchup or your favorite dipping sauce!

6 Tricks For The Best Crispy Sweet Potato Fries

So how do you get actually CRISPY baked sweet potato fries? Follow these tips for best results:

  1. Leave the skins on! The skins get crispier than the orange flesh of the sweet potatoes, so I recommend leaving the skins on when you can, since they’ll develop that crispy outer coating.
  2. Cut them evenly so they cook evenly. I recommend cutting your sweet potato fries into 1/2″ thick sticks with a sharp chef’s knife. The more evenly you cut the sweet potato fries, the more evenly they’ll cook, so it’s worth the little extra time to really get this right.
  3. Add arrowroot or cornstarch. This is a GREAT little trick. If it works for your dietary needs, adding some cornstarch (gluten-free) or arrowroot (paleo) can help create an outer coating on the fries that’ll crisp up when baked.
  4. Spread them out in a single layer for more air circulation. If oven sweet potato fries are packed too tightly, they can steam instead of roast. Spread them out so there’s a little space between each fry. Try not to let them overlap or touch too much when baking. It might seem like extra steps, but the more careful you are about this, the more crispy they’ll get.
  5. Keep That Temperature Up & Flip Regularly. A high temperature can really help crisp up the skin and the starch layer. You’ll want to cook your fries on the center rack of the oven and flip them every 10 minutes for even browning.
  6. Eat Them Hot! Lastly, homemade sweet potato fries will start to soften once they’re out of the oven, so the sooner you can enjoy them, the better!

What’s The Best Way To Re-heat Sweet Potato Fries To Make Them Crispy? Honestly? Popping them in the air fryer for a few minutes (5-8 min) at 400 degrees F. But, if you don’t have an air fryer, putting them on a greased sheet pan in the oven for 5-10 minutes at 400 degrees F. will help crisp them up again.

  1. I don’t even love sweet potatoes by any means, but these are amazing!!! I am doing whole 30 and wanted a fun side and these hit the spot. I didn’t need any condiment to dip them in because they were so good! I baked them at 400 in my ninja for 13 minutes.

  2. These were really good. I had to make mine AIP, so I’m sure not as tasty as they could have been, but they were totally delicious to us! FYI, we made half in the oven half in the air fryer. Neither was crispier than the other. Hubby says we’re definitely making these again.

    1. I love hearing that! We always have this seasoning on hand! I’ve been putting it on other roasted veggies (like squash) recently, and it’s so good that way, too!

    1. I haven’t done them in the air fryer, but yes, I think so! Just make sure to shake them regularly so they don’t steam. The more they’re spaced out, the better they’ll crisp!

  3. Great recipe! I will keep some of this seasoning on hand for sweet potatoes from now on. Even if I do not have time to cut into fries it adds so much flavor. The fries are pretty fun though!
